Well, it depends on what length the necklace should be.
If I made a choker then I would start with 2.5 times longer cords, so 4*2,5m.
But it also depends on what is the style of the necklace (the example necklace on the tutorial was made of three different parts: the main pendant is separate from the chain pattern, I added the cords and started the chain pattern after finishing the pendant).
And it also depends on how the finishing is made (sliding knot on a longer braided cord or just using a metal closure and cut off the unnecessary cords.)
The more you practice the better you will be in estimating the amount you need.
But to tell you the truth, even if I am asked to make an earring I didn’t make for a long time I go to the tutorials and look at the numbers. 😀
It is good to create notes and preserve the numbers for a later occasion.
